Amazing Soccer Pitch in Lofoten Islands, Norway

Very interesting. I know the US has also had issues with American Football pitches and has been very criticized for similar reasons. Interestingly, Norway is one of the countries with most FIFA approved artificial grass pitches.

  • In 2010 the Netherlands changed from using its own national standard to using the FIFA standard. The country has the largest number of approved pitches, accounting for 561 compared to 474 in 2013.

  • Turkey, which also adopted the FIFA standard, ranks second highest with 356 approved pitches compared to 222 in 2013.

  • The UK ranks third with 331 approved pitches compared to about 170 in 2013.

  • Elsewhere, Morocco and Canada stand out as countries that particularly value FIFA approval with 90 and 84 pitches respectively.

Other countries with more than 25 approved pitches are:

  • Sweden (46)

  • Norway (41)

  • Belgium (41)

  • Portugal (36)

  • Spain (35)

  • Poland (35)

  • Ireland (33)

  • Australia (32)

  • USA (32)

  • China including Hong Kong (30)

  • New Zealand (28)

By comparison, Germany probably has the highest number of installed pitches in Europe but only 21 are approved by FIFA. It is estimated that FIFA testing accounts for around 8-10% of global soccer pitch installations.
