What's sad is that it's been a concerted effort by the major parties in the US for decades, at least my whole life, but very likely since near the founding - but pitting the people (whom are supposed to be be running the government) against each other is so easy that those in power get what they want, regardless, by promising they are for or against this and that and playing the emotions of the masses. (See A People's History of the United States; our 1995 version ends on such an optimistic note about the internet and universal community that it makes me cry reading it. They could never foresee what social media would do.) I'm going to bed before I get too depressed writing about all this. I've written too much as it is.
