Time for the annual “what’s your unpopular Star Wars opinion” post! I’ll start:

I feel like I wear my unpopular opinions on my sleeve often, so I'll get one out the way that often pops up in my Star Wars discussions, and then I'll get one that I don't talk about quite as much.

My obvious grab has to be an opinion on The Rise of Skywalker cause I got a ton of unpopular TRoS opinions. I think what would be the most unpopular of them (and is a bit more specific than "TRoS is best film") is that for me TRoS I enjoy in a particular cinematic way I rarely find. Even those who like TRoS, in my experience, tend to like it as more of a popcorn flick, a bit of pulpy fun with some poignant moments. That's fine of course, but like I love TRoS in a similar way to the work of folks like Kurt Krenn, Dziga Vertov, Dario Argento, Lana/Lily Wachowski, David Lynch, etc, poring over every frame. The way that JJ uses movement, focus, color, and composition for storytelling totally blows my mind, in TFA and TRoS. If you unfroze me in a hundred years and film students were discussing it, I would not be shocked.

A less obvious grab though: I like Dark Empire a lot. It holds up real well, I freaking love the art style of the first couple runs or so, and there is a lot more going on thematically than I initially gave credit for. I interpreted Luke learning about the dark side to try and destroy it within as some sort of grimdark gray jedi type thing initially and wasn't as keen on it despite loving the stylism, but there's a lot of tasty Jungian type stuff in there which jives with a lot of what is focused on thematically in Star Wars lately. It's also got this sense of scale and these kinds intricate, nasty designs, and a lot of the panel layout is really rad as someone not super familiar with comics. Lots of shit popping out of one frame and jutting into another, more unique / less standardized layouts. It had this very personal crafted touch to me.

As a corollary to add extra unpopularity: I think Dark Empire is leagues better than the og Thrawn trilogy as a follow up to RotJ. It's a rant unto itself, but basically the way it deals with stuff like force ghosts, Jedi, and ysalimiri (among other things) gives this sense that like the force is just one small part of the Star Wars universe that can be countered by and is subservient to natural forces like evolution and cunning. It's interesting, but it's just a bit too far afield of like my core enjoyment of Star Wars.
