Americans Don’t Want Books Banned, But They’re Divided Over What Schools Teach

You know, I'm really confused about what you guys think a middle schoolers knowledge of sex is.

I'm 21, probably considered early Gen Z. I've known internet and social networks my whole life, however my first phone was still a Nokia button phone. We knew what sex was by fifth grade. I was a sheltered kid up until then, but it's still unavoidable. I lost my virginity at 14, which was 7th - 8th grade? I'm not sure how European grades translate to American ones.

The point that I'm trying to make is that your kids will find out what sex is. They just will. Advocating for banning sex education won't stop them - they're teenagers for God's sake, teenagers have had sex since the start of time.

In my opinion, as soon as teenagers have gone through puberty, they should be given atleast a basic level of sex education. Because they'll have it, whether you like it or not. It's either going to be fairly accurate information coming from the education system, or it's going to be wildly differing information, based on whatever your kid, or other teens in his class picked up on the internet and shared amongst each other.

Your kid (and by "your kid", I don't mean your specific kid. I mean the kids of the majority of parents), is gonna learn about sex in middle school from their peers, no matter the level of sexual education given. A lot of them are going to actually have sex. The only thing that's going to change by you banning these books or these lessons, is the quality of information that they're getting beforehand. And there's been countless studies showing the link before information and preventative measures given to these kids, and the levels of teen pregnancy and other side effects like STD's
