Amos Yee writes a new blog post about Vincent Law

I do not know who is right and who is wrong because we read only information from the media and Amos' blog. Do we have enough information to pass a judgment? No. Are we in a position to pass a judgment? No.

I prefer to look at things from a different angle.

20 years ago, can such an event of Amos Yee making a big hoo-ha happen? No, because the Internet was just introduced and no one knows how to use it.

10 years ago, can such an event happen? No, because though by then emails and websites were already prevalent, the culture of blogging had just started. It was dominated mainly by teenagers ranting about life in school. It was also when Mr Brown just started.

Today, can such an event happen? Yes, but not likely. The technology is here. Enabled and empowered by technology, the culture of freedom of expression is stronger than before. In Singapore, it takes more than that for an individual to do what Amos had done though.

You need an individual with Amos' calibre. Check out his language in his blog. How many can write like him? Check out his communication skill in his Youtube video. How many can produce a video like him? Controversial as it was, his talent cannot be denied.

You can clearly see the trend. More than ever, voices will be amplified through technology. Voices whether beneficial or detrimental to society can no longer be suppressed effectively. So what should society do then? Rather than focusing on technology, we should focus on the root which hold us together - common humanity values. And what are those? Morality, compassion and love for our fellow beings.

Easier said than done. But perseverance we should.
