Where do you think Singapore is heading in 5 years time?

I think you answered your own question. Singapore’s now one part of a global economy that you’re now fortunate to compete in.

I have no doubt that isolationist policies in a globalized economy usually leave citizens in a worse place, even if it does lessen wealth inequality, it does so in the most Pyrrhic way possible (by making everybody poorer and forcing out the wealthy to go somewhere else).

Frame it this way, counterfactually: we live in a globally-connected economy, with two dueling superpowers (US and China) and a declining superpower with military might (Russia).

Given this, which nation would you be a citizen of and a resident of (both of these things can be decoupled, of course, with some effort) to give you the best shot in competing in this environment?

I suggest thinking through this carefully, ignoring your own circumstances for a moment. Then, later, reintroduce your current circumstances and compare.

Having done this thought exercise myself, I suspect that you might come to the same conclusions: that while being a citizen and resident of Singapore might not necessarily give you the best shot at competing, it certainly blunts your downsides, and it’s not without upsides either.

I don’t know your personal circumstances, but given that Singapore doesn’t impose any structural obstacles that get in the way of your financial activities, beyond basic laws to thwart financial crimes, and furthermore is quite well-connected to the global economy, it’s not likely you’ll have a much better chance of financial upsides unless you actually relocate to either the USA or China where you’ll benefit from direct access to capital or markets.

Only you can speak to your risk appetite and desire for financial upsides.

You could, for example, reside in the SF Bay Area and maximize your financial upsides, but also expose yourself to several other ruinous outcomes). If Singapore doesn’t match your risk/reward profile, being a Singaporean citizen is highly-beneficial to your leaving to some other location where you might find a better fit, given the ease with which Singaporeans are able to obtain foreign visas.

All of this assumes you’re a reasonably motivated and reasonable human being who can parse elementary English and can use the Internet (which is a reasonable assumption since you’re posting on Reddit). I don’t think you’ll have trouble competing in the global economy, if you’re Singaporean, so, Godspeed!
