Anecdotally, can we talk about fat intake vs libido?

Hey /u/imsoldbro I've been suffering from low libido for a over a year now. I think I know the root cause: going for a long period with a late deficit. In my experience, and the book also suggests I'm right, is that macros are important, but calorie amount is more important (for T levels and thus libido)

I found a book written buy a guy that had wrecked his T levels down to almost 0, and he has written about everything he did to fix it. I considered writing a long post about what I did from the book, but eventually figured it's best just linking to it: Here's the PDF.

There's a lot of useful stuff in the book, there's a lot of things backed up by research. If you read it you'll find how many factors that contribute to testosterone levels (which are connected to libido)

I'll just sum of the key points from the book that I've implemented into my daily life:

  • Don't go too low on calories: if you're cutting, just use a modest deficit, otherwise stay at or above maintenance.
  • Don't go too low on fat carbs. Get adequate protein but keep it it just that - adequate but not too high.
  • Don't train way too hard, and get good rest. (all about keeping your cortisol levels in check)
  • As far as supplements there's not a lot they can do for you, although there are some minerals/vitamins like zinc and vitamin D, that if you are deficient in them can have an impact on your T.
  • Sleep is really important, try to get 8 hours!
  • How you perceive yourself(your role in the world) and your body language can have a surprisingly large effect on your T.
  • Don't drink too much alcohol! The research are clear that too much alcohol will have a big negative impact on your T levels, the good news is however, that the negative effect is only apparent when you go over a certain amount of alcohol, and a couple of drinks will likely have no effect, if not even raise your T.

Hope this can help. I'm currently on a 'journey' to fix my libido, and it takes time for me since I was at an extreme deficit for so long, which stressed my body, which just caused a domino effect of other issues like worsened sleep that just kept making things worse. I have morning wood now though, it's not as hard as it was before but I'm slowly getting there I think.

As you'll learn fat is only one piece in the puzzle and there's a lot of factors
