Is anybody else maybe... Not so fond of Hagrid?

Well, I really like Hagrid as a person. He's really sweet, warm and jovial.

But as much as I like him, I don't think I would like his class environment too much. I really do like the scene where Luna tells us that most of Ravenclaw thinks he's not a very good teacher, and how, when Prof. Grubby-Plank replaces him, everyone has to admit the class is more organized.

Hagrid's classes are pretty all over the place, for various reasons that are not always his fault. For example, he was really confident in the hippogriff class (which was really interesting, and showcased his way with animals that he was able to 'tame' a flock of hippogriffs to use in his class) until Malfoy decided to blatantly disregard the instructions. After that, wiped of his confidence and out of fear of compromising his career, the kids got stuck on Flobberworms all year. While I fully understand that, it must not have been great academically for the kids. Isn't there a curriculum of things they should learn each year? They sort of had the same problem the year after in GoF, where they only learned about Blast Ended Skrewts all year, from what we can tell.

Speaking of Blast Ended Skrewts, Hagrid seems to have a bit of trouble realizing what creatures are appropriate for the age groups he's teaching. Making 14yr olds work on experimental creatures that you've illegally bred is not the best decision.

However, I do think we see that Hagrid becomes a way better teacher when he gains more experience and confidence in himself. We've seen on multiple occasions that he has a vast knowledge of creatures, and that others respect him for that (ex; Prof. Grubby-Plank mentions that Hagrid has done a great job in training the Thestrals to not attack owls, he takes care of Madame Maxime's Abraxans, etc), so he definitely has the knowledge. I just think he needs to be a bit more organized in the execution of his lesson plan!
