Anyone have experience taking a landlord to small claims court due to withholding a large amount of a security deposit?

What is the process like? First, you'll need to fill out the small claims court forms and serve your landlord. My case was in the East Bay, but the process was actually pretty fast. I brought a bunch of evidence, but the judge wouldn't even look at any of it. They ultimately ruled that my landlord had to pay back my deposit in full. The hard part, though, is after their decision. The judge makes the settlement, but you have to find a way to collect the money yourself.

Based on the above info, how strong is our case? It might depend on your evidence, but the Bay Area is generally very tenant-friendly.

Could taking them to small claims court somehow backfire and end up costing us more than the $1500? Only if your landlord counter-sues you, but that would mean they would also have to fill out the small claims forms, too, and serve you.

Are there any better/more effective means of resolving this matter? Reaching some kind of agreement with your landlord.
