Why aren’t stimulants used for depression treatment?

If you’re not careful I can definitely make it worse, I’ve been on and off stimulants since 2016- I found in particular the instant release formulas are used to have a bit of a roller coaster affect, where I would love the feelings I get from the initial onset but then they come down was neurochemically awful and psychologically dangerous.

I started on my vents and it was like a key in a lock, I was able to get a business going and had some moderate success for a couple years; switched to dexidrine and subjectively I thought it was better but realistically that was when the roller coaster started. I was forced to come off in 2018 and the withdrawal, along with concurrent benzo withdrawal led to the worst depression of my life… (thanks resident psychiatrist)

I went back on the stimulant in 2019. In late 2021 I had a new psychiatrist who thought the Dexedrine might be making depression worse overall… But then I spent a year off of it again and the ADHD lead to circumstantial depression because I couldn’t get my life together.

I recently got back on, this time trying Adderall XR and it’s working really well for me. Takes a bit to kick in and only take it after a meal but lasts for a long long time without messing up my sleep, or any extreme highs and lows… It’s a slow come up and then I’m in my therapeutic window for a good 4-5 hours, then slow come down. I add a small hint of caffiene to keep it going but overall depression has gotten better since going back on, mainly because I’m back to socializing and not falling into the adhd and depressive delirium
