Artists are in trouble. Their work is being stolen by AI. Asking for advice in comments on forming a union for artists.

I think you're right, it'll always be a loosing battle, it'll be a while before the tech matures enough to fully displace artists, and of course people will still make art for the passion and creative outlet, but the market will dry up for many of the most easily monetisable products.

But this outcome will further exacerbate inequality, and further concentrate wealth and power in the hands of fewer and fewer, so I still think any attempt to get that wealth redistributed amongst the people being displaced is worth fighting for. It could set a precedent that as automation continues, the large institutions that reap the profits from automation are obliged to share, and maybe eventually this licensing system can be replaced with a more general UBI.

Strategically though, people's minds and imaginations are captured by these models right now, and it could be a 'strike while the iron is hot' moment to advocate for not just artists, but bring peoples attention to the increasing problem automation causes in a society that allows such massive concentrations of wealth.

I'm sure when bookkeepers and accountants are starting to loose work it'll really sink in for the public that these models shouldn't be privately owned and profited from, but they're the culmination, or dare I say, the reward for millions of hours of work done by millions of people, and we've all contributed the knowledge and labour required to build them and we should all be able to share in the profits.
