The AskAnthropology Career Thread (2021)

I studied maritime archaeology and graduated with a masters in 2017, but during the intervening years I pursued other interests and did not advance in the field at all. The silver lining is that I became independently wealthy (not to brag but to give some context to the part that follows), but I feel like it was at the expense of my chance of a career in Archaeology. I live abroad from my home country on a self-employed visa, so I am not able to work for a CRM firm without obtaining a new visa in my country of residence or returning to my home country, which I would really rather not do.

Lately I've been wondering how I would go about getting into the field but it seems an insurmountable obstacle to me, I had only a few contacts and most of them passed away. I am not interested in relocating from where I live, so I have been investigating volunteer activities in my area to see if there is something I could do nearby just so I can at least do something

If I had to describe what I would really like to do, it would be to work for an organization like broadreach or an underwater archaeology field school; or possibly run one of my own. But although I have some sailing/boating/commercial diving experience, I know it's nowhere near enough to step into the role of a project manager or foundation head. So I'm back to the problem of what to do to get more work experience in this field without upending my life and moving back to my home country to work as a CRM, or paying cash for the 'opportunity' to work at a field school.

Any replies are greatly appreciated!
