The Banshees of Inisherin: Masks of those hypocritical characters

I'd really recommend a rewatch. After the first viewing, I felt broadly similar to you. But two more watches and I saw a lot more complexity appear. There simply isn't any evidence that Padraic is a loving friend! He may not cut his fingers off, but he treats Dominic very shabbily during the film. You've lauded looking through a window to check if Colm is inside a house that Padraic's burning down over an accident that Padraic directly caused as an example of him caring about Colm! It strains credulity that you see such a one-sided story here, and it's a shame such one-sidedness robs the film of its ambiguous beauty. Once again, I agree with a negative assessment of Colm's character. The negative assessment of Padraic's character is just as vital to the film.
