BBC debate between the candidates for Mayor of Greater Manchester

This congestion charge myth is hilarious. Heard it from taxi drivers and gob shites on Twitter but there's no appetite for such a thing.

Where are you getting this 'no appetite' for such a thing from? Are you talking about appetite amongst the public? Or the authorities who would be implementing it?

If it’s the former, absolutely agree. The 2008 referendum was massively against it, and I'd be against it as well.

But if it's the second bit, I don’t think it’s as clear cut.

I am a transport consultant, I work very closely with various organisations involved in the Manchester road network including on some major projects that you’ve probably noticed if not been effected by and believe me, the general consensus amongst my peers and people in the local authorities and TfGM is one of “not officially being talked about, but no one would be surprised”.

Won’t go into much detail, partly because it’s a bland topic and partly cause I reckon you could work out who I am through a little search of my profile and I don’t want work mates judging me based on the absolute bollocks I talk on reddit, but there does seem to be a general move towards looking at (if not actively investigating and setting up) wider road network systems that could be used to introduce road pricing. ' Having said that, I don’t think we’ll get a ‘congestion charge’ any time soon. I reckon we’ll get a London style T-Charge (emissions charging), and even then I don’t think it’ll happen for a good few years. But if we have one at some point in the early 2020’s without another referendum on the topic my jaw won’t be hitting the ground.
