Bi-Weekly ADVICE Mega-Thread (Jun 20 2016)

Hey fellow engineers. This is a little bit long so thanks in advance for reading and advising. I'm looking for some career advice on two topics, namely career/field transitioning and what to do with a [highly likely] promotion option.

TL,DR: How do you career shift from manufacturing to something more altruistic? And, if you're planning to leave your company within 12 months, do you take an internal promotion in the mean time namely for the money?

First off a little background, I'm in my late 20s second job after college with only a BS in Materials Eng. My resume and experience are pretty strong. I'm working for a large manufacturing company. Lately I have lost passion in what I do. This downturn in passion could be from boredom (current role 2 yrs) but I believe it is related to not caring about their company mission/products.

I've been looking to career shift into something more altruistic which would generate a positive impact. My thoughts on this are really scattered with nothing concrete. I've thought about going in environmental engineering/sustainability or humanities possibly policy change or public speaking (?). I basically have no experience in any of these fields. The job search alone is difficult. When I start looking all the results are for asbestos remediation or require experience. Im trying to highlight my analytical skills and other transferable skills on my resume. Does anyone have advice on how to make such a drastic change? How do you find what field you should be in? Most importantly does anyone know of any organization/affiliations /companies that aim to serve while using high level technical skills?

Secondly, I'm being considered for an internal promotion to a senior engineer. Knowing the above, should I take it knowing I will leave eventually in roughly 12 months? The main motivator would be money. Although I fear leaving too soon and burning a bridge. How bad of a burn is that? Secondly, should I ask my boss for advice? He's the transparent type who really cares for you and your happiness. He truly feels like a friend. I think he would support me but might keep the company's interest first. Lastly, is it worth the promotion and headache or should I just focus on switching? (I guess it would come at a price, I say +20% would be enough to promote.)

Looking forward to what all your intelligent selves have to say!
