Hey, some companies in the US do it, but so far I've only been at one that has it (out of 4 employers for myself, plus half a dozen others I know the benefits of from friends/family). Once I found out about it I was like, "Wtf, this is amazing, basically free money!" Then I found out it's normal in EU. Mine isn't 10.5% and it has a bunch of preconditions (e.g. it doesn't actually vest until you're with the company for like 5 years), but hey--I'm not putting a penny into it (it's like 7% of my salary, completely funded by the company) and I never expected it, so it's a nice bonus to me.
The worst part is that having a company with actually decent benefits in the US is so rare that it's going to be a difficult decision to ever leave it.
