Childhood ADHD Linked to Secondhand Smoke. Children exposed to tobacco smoke at home are up to three times more likely to have attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) as unexposed kids, according to a new study from Spain

I have a very lengthy reply to this post and the former one that suggested ADHD was merely the summation of bad parenting and unruly kids, which is now conveniently deleted. I'll try to essentially post an abstract first, and then reply to that with the full version. Sorry, Reddit. I failed at brevity today.

No I'm not of the opinion that ADHD is over diagnosed, at least not in kids. I do believe it was that way around 20+ years ago, however, which affects the way we view ADHD today. I am also aware that there are plenty of adults who basically talk physicians into giving them stimulants for ADHD symptoms, but they don't actually have ADHD. I guess that counts as a misdiagnosis, and we really need to hold both parties accountable. But, in thinking of childhood diagnosis, which is more common, I think we have gotten past over diagnosing.

That said, I have a strong opinion on this because I have ADHD, and I know from experience it is misunderstood by a lot of people.

First, ADHD is not a lack of resolve to behave better, or focus better, or sit still, etc. While impulsivity IS a common characteristic (e.g. random thoughts, feeling the need to take care of a task immediately), ADHD is not a moral, parenting, or values based issue. Nor is it an IQ issue. Basically, I am not a heathen, I just have ADHD.

Second, (and I am paraphrasing this from "Delivered From Distraction") ADHD is better thought of as a way that some people's minds work rather than a disorder.

Some people ask if ADHDer's should just find jobs/lives that better conform to the way they think. Short answer: Fuck that shit.

Third, ADHD shows up in different ways. Some kids will have behavioral problems and act out. Others are just hyperactive and want to interact with everyone and everything. My point is, we can't apply a broad statement such as, "ADHD is really just poor behavior and shitty parenting," because only a fraction of ADHDers have behavioral issues, and good parenting - short of getting a kid to a psychiatrist - doesn't solve any of the issues. Furthermore, the kids that do have behavioral issues typically don't improve until they have had professional care. Ergo, ADHD is not about a choice to behave or parent better, any more than suffering from depression is a choice to not be happy.

Fourth, for someone who has ADHD, medications are not giving them an advantage over everyone else, it simply helps level the playing field.

Clarification number 5: You do not know what ADHD is like until you have ADHD. Fore example, being sad does NOT mean you know what depression feels like, or that you understand it by proxy. They are different animals.

Sixth, and final, point...medications. Yes, the medications (esp. the stimulants) are dangerous and addictive.

Kids with ADHD that take stimulants are far less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol than the kids with ADHD that never do.

“But Amphetamine only needs one methyl group to become Methamphetamine!” Amphetamine (Adderall) is not the same as Methamphetamine, but they are similar.

Before you judge, get educated.
