Day 59 - appreciation post for "Chlorine"

This song is one of the best on Trench. It represents Twenty One Pilots’ big shift back to their roots, and the lyrics show that. The lyrics are strange and fearless, and when you read them you can see that Tyler is being completely authentic, expressing emotions in his signature cryptic way with no limits, and not worrying about what anybody will think of them. I see the lyrics as art, they do such a good job of expressing the meaning using metaphors.

The beat slaps and it’s super catchy, and the production is amazing. My favourite part of the song is the “can you build my house” slow part at the end. I can’t even describe the feeling it gives me, so many emotions are expressed in that part.

The song is eerie, strange, cryptic, and super catchy. I’m sure there’s some people out there who are turned away by the song for it’s unusual lyrics and strange, dissonant background music, but in my opinion that just shows that Tyler is truly being himself and not worrying about the mainstream ear. To my ears, it’s beautiful. I think a lot of hip-hop fans have gotten into Twenty One Pilots recently, especially through Trench and even this song, because from a hip-hop ear it’s truly amazing.

While I believe most of Trench is very underrated, this song certainly isn’t. It’s one of their most streamed songs now, and it has a ton of views on YouTube. I’m so glad it’s getting the attention it deserves.
