Why did All Things Bright and Beautiful do so poorly?

The biggest problem with ATBAB to me was it continued a sound that I was a bit burnt out on. I remember listening to it when it was released and I just couldn't get into it; it was too much like Ocean Eyes and Maybe I'm Dreaming (but with better production, singing, and songwriting). It wasn't until very recently that I went back to give it another chance and found I liked it a lot more than I expected (I put a couple songs on my"most overlooked Owl City" playlist).

To be honest, and I know this will be a little controversial, I don't think any one of the songs would have made a good pop radio single, they're too unique. It's not that they aren't good songs, just that they wouldn't fit in on pop radio, DJs wouldn't have played them. And this is why the label didn't do much to promote it. They probably just let Adam do his thing, then for Midsummer Station pushed him to collaborate with professional songwriters to try and get some more marketable music. When you sign a big dollar record deal, your bosses expect your music to pay some of their bills. Whoever pays the piper calls the tune.
