Direct Representation?

Unfortunately, the people doesn't always know best.

Take the average Canadian. He has an average job with an average house in an average neighborhood where his average family lives.

He has an average understanding of his world. He has an average understanding of international affairs and of the economy. He has an average understanding of medicine, science and sociology.

He is average skills, average knowledge and average opinions.

Now, would you want him as a leader? or would you prefer the best, most skilled, most knowledgeable people to lead us?

Now realize that half of the population is below average...

If we did have direct representation, the below average people's votes would cancel out the above average people's vote, leaving the average Joe to make all the important decision.

As unfortunate as it is, direct representation would make Canada an average country. Not horrible but definitely not a world leader.

If you want to find a problem with our political system, instead look at the influence of money and the media.

Political power should be about serving the people and always making the best decisions for the people. It should never be about political party IDEOLOGIES, it should never be about creating yourself a well paying job in the private sector.

Solutions exists

1- The Alternative vote, making sure that nobody can rule with only 35% or 40% of the vote.

2- Limiting political mandates: Politics is a service to the community, nobody should be allowed to spend their entire professional lives sitting in the House as a backbencher. You are allowed 2 terms and after that, either you run for the leadership of your party or you return where you came from...

3- Public funding of political parties: Donations to parties always come with a string attached. The less money there is in politics, the better democracy works for all.

There are other solutions but starting with these ones would be a great start.
