[Discussion] In regards to B2P MMORPGs, what are your opinions on cash shop items with small advantages?

Heh, I asked a similar question the other day regarding pets (more abusive than item bonuses IMO) and got shredded with the replies... https://www.reddit.com/r/blackdesertonline/comments/42uplx/any_update_on_the_p2w_pet_situation/

I think it is mostly because I used the world P2W in a context other than PvP. Once people saw that phrase, they skipped reading and went into flametroll mode. Apparently the consensus was to "get a job you poor scrub" ...lol

I think its a dicey situation, the pet thing outlined in my post is probably the worst of what they are offering at the moment (which honestly isn't that bad, compared to other mmo). Since there is no other source for pets, you breed them (breed 2 into higher tier, old pets die), the fact that there is a chance at passive bonuses from a random selection, etc... so that buying pets is essentially gambling. (for good stats, not purely cosmetic) I think it is kind of shitty but apparently this would be considered convenience to a lot of players and is fair game.

The passive bonuses are somewhat lame IMO also. +Luck on underwear for example is not entirely insignificant, but it doesn't effect PvP so a lot of players don't give a shit, or defend it.

Even the ghillie suit bonus will get defended ( "you are an idiot if you get jumped" ) and that does give an implicit combat advantage (however minor or insignificant someone finds it)

I think the point is, that if you removed +luck from underwear, or name hide from Ghillie, a lot less people would purchase these items - so what that means is that people are buying these 'cosmetics' for their utility, not their appearance. (at least some people). If they remove those (minor) bonuses, they loose a portion of customers.

It may not be pay to win in the literal sense but something to keep an eye on. During the RU release for example when it was allowed to put item shop items on the auction house, whales could buy lots of pets (only available through cash shop) and sell them (essentially buying gold). This is a big reason why its disabled for NA/EU.
