Is it disrespectful or illegal to care for the grave of a person who you don't know or have any relation with?

We have a small family cemetery (around 12-15 graves) that we go to when we can (we live in another state now). There is only one relative there we actually know, a grandmother. All the others are older graves. But when we go we try to tidy up all the stones. There is no caretaker that we know of for this place, it’s just the corner or a field that once belonged to the family but has since been sold.

A tree fell on one of the headstones so we cleared up the limbs best we could (the farmer hauled off the big part of the tree which was nice as he didn’t have to do it). And there were three little girls (sisters) that all died before two, they had no stones so one of my relatives marked their places with some home made head stones. I always take flowers for the three little girls when I go.

I mean we know only the one but we are there so we try to be kind to the others. I imagine the people that knew most of these individuals are all either gone or unable to go anymore so I see no harm in trying to respect those that are gone.
