Doing some light reading during some stand by work. When I first got into wildland I was told to read up on major past incidents and this book was one of my first I read. I'm sure this is something a lot of first years would have heard during your first weeks of training.

I’ve read this book. In fact I was on the fireline coming off of night shift on The Diablo fire out of Big Bear Ca the morning I found out about the fatalities of the South Canyon Fire. It really sucked the morale out of the young firefighter that was me. In subsequent years I’ve read many of the books about the tragedy fires. Apart from being a student of fire and learning from these fires you never know when you’ll end up working with some of the survivors on the fireline. It behooves you to be able to speak intelligently about our history. It shows a respect for the discipline. Good read. Keep up the good work. Try “The Big Burn” by Timothy Egan and “Young Men and Fire” by Norman Maclean.
