Humans happen to be animals too. A better example would be the mineral or plant pokemon, but even they are generally also based on animals.

Are you not going to chastise GameFreak for creating a giant pink blob rabbit in the Jigglypuff line?

I would absolutely critique that if it was released now. It was a sub-par pokemon design and the only thing that saved it was the character they made out of it in the anime, which was admittedly amusing.

I don't think any one of these would have been a dealbreaker. It's more that they are all present, and following up on what is one of my favorite pokemon designs of all time that does follow most of the animal conventions.
