Driving through Texas and having my (non-smoker) car ripped through because a drug dog "alerted" on my vehicle, I now understand how bullshit the war on drugs truly is.

Cruising (in the right lane) through the Texas panhandle, I see a police officer pull out about a half mile behind me. He speeds up to about 85 then pulls past me and slows until he is beside my vehicle. He then stares at me, and pulls in behind me and hits the lights. He is out of his car within 5 seconds of coming to a stop, and walks to my passenger side window. He immediately asks if I am carrying any weapons or drugs, to which I replied no. He asks if I know the speed limit. I say yes, 75. He asks if I know why I pulled him over. I say no. He says I was doing 77. At this point, he asks for my license and insurance. I hand it to him, then the next words are "please step out of the vehicle".

He sits me in his squad car, and begins a tirade of questions regarding where I'm leaving from, going to, etc. and repeatedly asks if I have come into contact with anyone with marijuana or was asked to carry any packages by anyone. I have been pulled over once before and the officer didn't ask ANY of these questions, so I'm doing my best to figure out what the hell is going on at this point. He then asks if he can search my vehicle. I reply "no sir, I do not consent to any searches" to which he replies, "OK you are being detained while we await a K9 unit".

Within a minute, 3 additional cars pull in behind me, including a K9 unit SUV. The officers are all outside of their vehicles. The K9 officer takes his dog around a full 360 of my car, beginning at the back left corner, with the trunk, then around my car in a CCW circle, with the dog showing zero signs of alerting. Like, none. The dog is sniffing and walking, not looking, barking, sitting, etc. No change whatsoever (again, I do not smoke). He walks PAST my driver's side door, to the rear door, and to the fuel cap. After a full 360 of no behavior, he walks the dog back to my drivers side door, looks at the dog, lifts his hand, and the dog lifts his paw too. At this point he walks the dog back to the truck and nods at the officer who is detaining me.

The officer whose squad car I was in then tells me the dog had alerted, and orders me out of his squad, where he begins patting me down while the other (at least 5) officers begin tearing through my vehicle. After 20 minutes and them finding exactly nothing, other than my nicotine liquid for my electronic cigarette, which the officers questioned me about, they tell me I am free to leave with zero apology for wasting 30 minutes of my time and violating my fourth amendment rights, all for the sake of finding and arresting me for a drug that I feel should be legal. I get the feeling a lot of people in this sub may share the same sentiment.

I was returning from a trip to the Grand Canyon and was soloing a 20 hour drive, and these assholes felt the need to bully me and make my trip longer and more stressful. Fuck Texas Highway Patrol.
