"Elephants have first right over forest" - Indian Supreme Court. Orders for demolition of wall that was blocking elephant migration corridor

This is misleading. Indian population is pretty distributed as far as countries go. Thre are 5 population centers usually between two rivers or a river and a mountain. The northern plains, the Deccan plateau divided into two zones, the eastern shores etc. THIS LINK is a better representation.

Indian wild elephants live all over the place, in many of those regions, the area overlap between elephants and humans, the south indian state of Kerala is a spectacular example of this. Both revered and hated among people, the elephant is not just part of the states crest, its an integral part of the culture. Farmers hate them for destroying crops but they are also revered by the same farmers.

Its a very complex situation and one of the only reason elephants and other large animals still survive is because Indian religions are naturalistic and somone or the other venerates these animals.

Source: Born here, grew up here and worked with elephants very closely since I am from the temple community. Lastly, I worked here. I am very conflicted with how these animals are treated and I don't know how I feel in the end of the day :(
