ELI5: How did Vision and Dental coverage come to be "outside" of general health coverage in the USA?

I am not you and I do not see how you and I are connected in such a way that would warrant me paying into a pot, by force.

I'm not about to start a debate but just wanted to clarify this point.

I hope you realize that's how all insurance works. If you have health insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, homeowners insurance, etc, that's what you're currently doing, ie. paying into a pot. Granted, it's not always "by force" except with auto and health insurance. But your premiums go into a pool with other premiums in order to pay out benefits. When you ask why your taxes should go towards paying someone else's medical expenses, the question you're really asking is "Why should my insurance premiums go towards paying someone else's medical expenses?" At that point though, it sounds like your point of contention isn't single payer. It's with the concept of insurance as a whole.

Once again, not trying to be snarky, belligerent, or divisive.
