ELI5: Why is it that when it is really cold outside, you can see steam coming from a vehicle's exhaust for several minutes, but then it becomes much less visible after the vehicle "warms up"?

I had a job at one point that was less than 5 minutes away by car and if I didn't catch a light could be more like 2-3 minutes. But I still wouldn't ride a bike because of the serious threat of theft. I could theoretically bring the bike in (someone else did that) but since it's a supermarket I felt like it was only a matter of time before I was told I couldn't walk the bike through the store especially since I worked in produce. And being in Massachusetts tracking muddy snow through after riding in 20 degree weather would be a regular occurrence. I could've walked but that would probably turn into a 20-30 minute walk each way (again in 20 degree weather or colder in the winter) and that actually impacts things quite a bit especially when working until the store closes. I'm guessing that is especially true for women who are more prone to being harassed or assaulted.

I'm generally pro walking and biking but think it's most practical in large cities. I have regularly taken the train into Boston and walked 35-40 minutes to and from the station in the city because of difficult-to-find and expensive parking and I didn't feel like driving into the city which is an epic mess because the city is so old it predates infrastructure planning. Seriously, like I'm talking 5-way intersections with no apparent ability to drive straight through coming from any direction or something equally absurd and city blocks don't exist in the normal sense so you can't simply take three rights to get back where you were. Just look at satellite photos comparing it to New York City or Chicago.

tl;dr Walking and biking are great imo but geography and sex can heavily impact the wisdom of that.
