[EVENT] Elections in Cyprus

With the shadow of the attempt on the life of Marakios III still looming in the air, there is still much contention about the election. Nevertheless the whole process is mostly peaceful with the occasional bout of violence. The results are as follows:

  • With 18 seats the centre-right Enianon party wins a plurality

  • With 10 seats is the far-right Pro-Eonosis coalition. While they were popular going into the election they lost some momentum due to the speech made by Marakios III and the subsequent assassination attempt.

  • With 6 seats is the Progressive Party of Working People who performed as expected.

  • With 14 seats is the Republican Turkish Party

  • With 11 seats is the National Unity Party. The close race in the Turkish population demonstrates the deep divide amongst Turkish Cypriots in attitude towards the Cyprus problem.

The results of the election produce political deadlock. While the PPWP and RTP are willing to form a government, and their combined 20 seats is a plurality, they still are unable to form a majority. The National Unity Party and Eonosis coalition refuse to work with their ethnic counterparts and therefore are unable to uproot the minority coalition.

To further add to the confusion, the winner of the Presidential election was Adil Dervis of the Republican Turkish Party. As the final runoff vote came down to Dervis and his Enianon counterpart Theodosios Zervas, Dervis was able to win the election be consolidating the Turk ethnic vote and running on a unity platform, which was enough to squeeze out the 238 vote margin he needed top win. Aware of the awkward status the government, Dervis proposed the following agreement to Zervas: Enianon would support the Government Coalition in all manners of foreign affairs while they would vote freely on matters of domestic policy. In exchange Theodosios Zervas will serve of Vice-President and as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
