Do you ever headcanon stuff you find immersion breaking?

I do this a lot.

I mean, a certain amount of unrealism is necessary. It is fiction, after all, it has to be more interesting than real life and the plot has to be advanced and the boring parts of living eliminated. A war story about my experiences in Iraq would be about half a page of semi-exciting action followed by 400 pages of me literally just standing around not doing anything. Realistic, but not very entertaining! That said, sometimes authors just flat out stumble and fall into tropey silliness. And yes, the absurdly overtalented teenager is the trope of tropes in fantasy.

But, you know, even the greatest quarterback throws the occasional interception. Sometimes I just need to rewrite a little bit of the story in my head to stay with an otherwise entertaining book.
