Agree! Given the story Kishi told, the best ending for Sakura and Sasuke's storyline for me would have been if Sasuke approached HER before he left to "atone" and asked if she would go out with him when he returns. Sakura tells him she'll be there for him but only as a friend. It shows Sasuke's growth and humility to actually approach her and it shows that the way he acted has a real cost. He could have had Sakura but he screwed up that chance. It also Sakura has matured and has more respect for herself.

Then maybe she marries Naruto or Rock Lee. That would have made the most sense to me. Or Kishi could have developed an actual chemistry between Sasuke and Sakura before he left.
