Why Fewer Galleries Are Opening Today Than 10 Years Ago

How much do you spend each year on original art? $500? $1,000? Probably a whole lot less.

Now think of everyone you know, then ask yourself how much they spend on original art each year. Probably same as you, if not even less.

Now think of all the hundreds and thousands of artists living just in America. Picture all the art they're making every day. You could fill the Grand Canyon with it. Where's it all supposed to go?

Who can possibly assign a value to this, and then who can profit from it? The answer is only a breathtakingly small handful of wealthy people who are able to convince other wealthy people that a certain art maker's work is of sufficient value to own. And none of this has anything to do with the cultural value of the art at all.

I have it from insiders that greater than half the New York City art galleries never turn a profit. They're vanity operations run by trustafarian fashionista-wannabes. And the ones that close didn't suddenly become unprofitable; their unprofitability became so large as to endanger the trust fund.
