First Doc's appointment in 8 years today - need advice

I won't lie and say that I'm thrilled with having to wait a month, if nothing else that kind of pisses me off because I feel like I'm not a priority.

I understand. I know I was frustrated at the time, too. I felt like "What I have had been working for me... why does he have to go and fuck with it, now?"

But the thing is that ADHD is difficult to diagnose... you can't just send some blood samples off to the lab or run a CAT scan. It's also something that a lot of people try to fake just to get the drugs for it... and, of you were just trying to scam him for the drugs, if you ever got caught selling them or abusing them, guess who's name is on that bottle? They have accountability when it comes to this kind of stuff, so it's really for everyone's best interest that they get a diagnosis from a specialist. If it was just depression or some other condition, then prescribing a stimulant line adderall could actually cause greater long-term harm and make things worse by getting you hooked on a stimulant on top of the underlying issue.

But I do certainly understand your frustration... but impatience is just another common characteristic of ADHD.

I'm just kind of shocked that they sent me away with nothing but follow up appointments today.

This might be partly a way of weeding out the people just looking to score drugs... most junkies won't bother following through with the appointment, so it could partly help in testing the severity and seriousness of your desire for treatment.

My wife said something about trying to schedule an appointment with another clinic to see about a second opinion (for my shoulder) but I don't want to jeopardize my relationship w/ my new Dr by doing that.

Even another PCP will almost certainly end up sending you to a specialist who had more experience diagnosing and treating these types of injuries. If you think of it like a car, your PCP is sort of like a Jiffy Lube... they can do basic maintenance really well, but you won't go to them if your transmission is having problems... you'd go to a transmission shop (specialist) or a full on mechanic (hospital). It's a rough analogy but it's the same basic idea: PCP really only deal with minor issues and basic health maintenance... but they often aren't experienced enough with the more complicated issues like mental health and joint/tendon pains that they can really accurately diagnose and treat them, so if it doesn't appear to be a relatively common issues or a simple fix, they defer to somebody who is.

If you ever want somebody to talk to about your ADHD or anything else, feel free to hit me up. I know how frustrating the whole thing can be and how much it can really suck to deal with everything, and sometimes it's just nice to be able to talk to someone who can relate.
