The Five Stages of Grief

Normally I wouldn’t engage with this argument since there’s a lot to unpack, but I’ll bite

So first of all, “communism” is actually just the end goal of human society. It describes a world of post-scarcity where there is such an abundance of resources that society can be organized according to the principle “from each according to their ability, to each according to their need.” Saying it “does not work” is a silly statement because 1) humans have not reached that point yet and 2) it working or not working is not a matter of debate; it is a state of affairs that humans (barring our extinction) will eventually arrive to as a result of the gradual resolution of class conflict.

But that’s probably not what you meant by your comment. You probably meant something along the lines of “governments that have called themselves communists have failed at providing good outcomes for their citizens.” This too is false though. This study conducted in 1986 found that when controlling for economic development, socialist countries performed better than capitalist countries in 30 out of 36 measures of the quality of life. What about after 1986 you may ask? Well, the USSR collapsed, China implemented capitalist reforms, and many remaining socialist government lost power, so there’s not much of a sample size anymore. However, Cuba has consistently outperformed countries of similar economic development in most (if not all) measures of quality of life.

You could argue that socialist countries failed to protect their governments from collapse/reform, to which I would respond “true!” But that speaks less to the validity of socialism than it does to the hegemony capitalism exerts over the world.

You could also argue that socialist countries failed to reach the level of economic development of capitalist countries, to which I would respond: are you familiar with how capitalist countries have achieved this level of economic development? And additionally, many socialist countries rate of economic growth surpasses that of even the most advanced capitalist countries!

Are there any other arguments you’d like to make?
