I thought this at first but the given the advantage of not being in that situation gave me time to think about it.

If the warning shot into the ground or wounding shot to the paw had made the tiger try and bolt but still keep hold of his dinner it could have ended much worse for the the guy who was the entrée. For the shooter you now have an angry tiger with tinnitus thrashing around trying to get away with as much fresh meat as it can making a harder target.
