We're talking about a social game that brings 25 year olds into direct contact with 12 year olds
I know that. Do you believe this guy poses a threat to 12 year olds at the GP? He sexually assaulted a fellow college student. More than a decade ago. Presumably not in a convention center full of thousands of people. Presumably she wasn't 12, either.
Yes, I would say that Wizards has some sort of responsibility when hosting an event of that nature to make sure that everyone is in a safe environment.
I agree. But I also asked "Are they an enhanced threat by participating? Or is it punitive?". I don't see how this guy represents a threat. What he did is distasteful. But I don't think there's any realistic risk that he'll stop shuffling between G1 and G2 and sexually assault his opponent. But I am willing to have my mind changed if you have some evidence that shows I should reconsider, I guess.
They literally give out serious fucking bans for threats of violence at magic tournaments
As they should. If you threaten someone at a tournament, you're a threat to people at that tournament (and it's not a great logical leap to say other tournaments as well). If you get drunk and beat up someone in a bar, that's terrible. But it doesn't automatically make you a threat to Magic players in a GP or an LGS.
yet we'd be up in arms if they banned someone who served time for beating someone to death?
Now you're inferring something that I didn't say at all. I'm on the fence, not "up in arms". I just think that if you issue bans, that they should be uniform and justified.
As long as it didn't happen at an LGS, then you're good I suppose.
I don't agree 100%. But if something occurs outside the context of Magic, I do believe you have a harder case to make for a ban, yes. Something happening at an LGS or a GP or other organized play makes the case more open ans shut.
