Greenpeace embarrasses Shell at the Belgium GP. Now the FOA pulled this video from YouTube, watch it in Dailymotion here.

By the transitive property, if you're using their products, you are evil as well. Big oil companies have nothing but the best interest for the environment; having worked for one, I can tell you that they highly encourage safety in their culture. Safety in this context extends to both environment and the people that are impacted by their projects.

It's not the petroleum companies responsibility to provide new alternatives. I can see the government being responsible; but they're already taking action by highly subsidizing renewable energy. I know this opinion isn't popular on Reddit but I'd rather speak my mind... The alternatives won't become feasible until they are economically viable.

Currently, renewable energy is harvested outside the big cities making energy storage a necessity. For example, windmills need large flat planes to get the wind, and since they rely on thermal gradients provided by the sun, they will not provide energy at night. Solar panels need large amounts of land for harvesting as well (though they can effectively be placed on top of buildings) but for mass consumption of energy large amounts of land will be needed. Lastly, when these energy sources produce energy it is in AC, and currently there is only DC energy storage available. Hence there is an efficiency loss from converting not only from AC to DC for storage but back to AC from DC... all together making these alternatives currently not feasible for mass consumption of energy. In the short term, petroleum will be needed while the infrastructure is being built and that could be a couple hundred years; in the mean time, you have the option to stop using your phone and all other electronics (and plastics) and go back to the 18th century style of living or you can be proactive and get an engineering degree and help solve the energy crisis we are facing.
