Grimes will have a new song coming out on the Suicide Squad soundtrack called 'Medieval Warfare'

Roc Nation is both a label and a management company right. I guess you're saying even the management part is "full service" but do we actually know she went for the "full service" option? She was probably looking for the most minimal management arrangement possible- remember Arbutus became suffocating over time, trying to control her career, and continuing to do that as her management, even after she formally left the label itself (Visions was a co-release but mostly 4AD, yet her management still set the deadlines of when it would be released) and that kind of hyper-controlling entity was exactly what she wanted to get out of circa 2013 when she signed with Roc. She wanted them to handle press and all the legal stuff, and I don't think security was even a concern because she had no immediate plans to tour or do anything in public. at that time, she was still trying to finish the "lost album" (or planning to) and living in a very secluded area (and to my knowledge, her address was never known by fans) of rural BC (and she may have had lots of weapons there too, like her grandparents raised her with).

She tweeted (in fact, this is the exact tweet that inspired those other tweets I sent you, re: Arbutus)

"its probably more lucrative to just throw down for pr & be 'completely' independent at this point."

She said that four days before signing with Roc. That, along with her apparent money limitations at the time (thanks to Arbutus non payment, and thanks to spending the entirety of Visions money on the gear, software and instruments to make her fourth LP), and along with her minimum security needs living in an isolated farm/cabin, all of it suggests she would not have ever gone for "full service" management at that time. She wanted to "throw down for PR" only. Roc has handled her PR and legal needs. Protecting her personal security is, unfortunately, probably not their responsibility unless she later added that element into her plan.

She told us herself, she didn't have security! It wasn't that she paid for it and they failed to provide it. She would be on that shit ok. Upgrading to "full service" may be exactly what she's been wanting to do, but couldn't afford to do (should they have been sweet enough to give it to her free? yes of course- but I wouldn't expect any company to do that). She already has to pay Roc a lot for what she has already, the PR. And there may be grounds to say they botched that re:AA. I think in fairness, she made all the major PR decisions of the initial rollout herself, often rejecting Roc's ideas, and that might account for both the horrible #36 debut, but also the aura of respect she has now among everyone, and the fact the reviews were universally positive, the backlash very short lived and none of the "sellout" accusations stuck. She was the one who made the choice to sacrifice higher sales to be true to her ideals- not defacing cities with fake graffiti to advertise the album, like Roc suggested; talking about feminism and politics in the early AA interviews, like Roc probably advised not to- her decisions were of course, the right ones, but it's easy to see Roc's point as her managers (trying to look out for her own bottom line), that she might have sold a lot more, initially (if not over time) if she made all those shitty compromises. what earned her respect for Roc was however, their willingness to merely provide such ideas as advice, but then step aside and she makes all the choices and they do not push her to do any of those things. She ultimately does what she wants and seems to have a good relationship with her current manager (whose name I forget- it's a woman though). it's actually her label, 4AD, that may be slightly less respectful of what she wants, since we know they asked for a different single rather than butterfly (possibly it was also their suggestion to replace the intended first single world princess ii with fwb instead, not sure).

anyway, I haven't heard much about tensions with Roc and, I imagine it's a huge expense even for them to just do PR because they usually handle major label artists with much more financial resources. Their prices are not designed for artists who are uncomproming about capitalist bullshit the way she is. so their artists, even indie ones, would have plenty of money on hand for that "full service" plan. it's actually possible that Jay made a special cut price deal with Claire for a custom "partial service" management (i.e. all the management Claire may have thought she'd need/want back in 2013) because Beyonce (and maybe Jay) personally loved Claire's music. True, she hasn't talked about Grimes lately- but she hardly talks about anything lately outside the songs so let's not take that as a diss- we know Bey loved the fuck out of Grimes in 2012-13, hell, she hired Claire's close friend Caroline Polachek to write a song, she got hardcore into "feminism" suspiciously soon after Claire's twin tumblr posts about the importance of feminism and about the greatness of Beyoncé/pop had gone viral... and she even controversially styled her hair to resemble Grimes. She then put serious attention into videos to a degree she hadn't before, possibly inspired (although the videos were hugely unlike Grimes videos) by Claire.

Any "appropriations" by Bey are short lived however, and Claire is at least as inspired by Bey as vice versa. In many ways Bey has been a secret supporter of Claire's career, which is why the pre-Lemonade anti-Beyonce attitudes from many on here were irritating (although I'm far from a hardcore BeyHiver). I feel your anger is really misplaced, blaming Jay-Z (hate him or not) for the lack of security. We have no idea what her contract says she gets, but from what she revealed publicly, she isn't getting it cause she isn't paying for it. And if all the publicly available descriptions of Roc's plans are "full service" ones with security, that may mean Jay and Bey actually did a huge favor for her by giving their favorite indie artist a cut-rate plan she could actually afford and that included all she wanted at the time.
