I understand not wanting to pay for something that you didn't budget for. I'm poor, but ended up in Honolulu with my parents and best friend for a graduation present. After eating at a ridiculously expensive restaurant called the Shore Bird, we were walking around Waikiki and ran into the parrot guy. He literally corners you, but he has two parrotts that are like 25 lbs. a piece. I love the pictures I took that evening, of which we ended up giving him 10 or fifteen bucks. He smelled awful. I call it the 3-day smell. A mixture of alcohol, body odor, and the lack of a shower for multiple days creates a smell that even a hard drinking college student has to turn away from. My mom was like "we dont need to give him that," referring to the twenty I was going to hand him. I have always had a place in my heart for people who don't have anything. It doesn't matter to me how they ended up that way, there they are, they don't have anything, and in comparison I have everything. I wish that more people would take photos with the guy and his dog. If he toned his drinking down a bit, got into a program, he could spend some time and money training a cat to sit on top of that dog, and a rat to sit on top of the cat--like the homeless guy who recently passed RIP in Denver--he never wanted for anything. I am not friends with a man anymore that I knew for decades because we were out drinking one cold, fall night (37 degrees or so not quite freezing but close enough), I saw a homeless person shivering on a bench curled up in the fetal position with no coat, sweater, blanket nada. I didn't even hesitate to go over and lay my coat over them so they might get a couple hours of warm sleep. I was mocked and ridiculed for giving up an expensive coat that I loved, to a person I would never see and "would probably tell you to go fuck yourself anyway." Some people are givers and some are takers. These are literally the two categories of people in the world.
