Is this a HDD or Graphics board problem?

FTFY:

  • CPU: i7 6700k
  • RAM: G.Skill 8GB 3200mhz x 2
  • Graphics: MSI GTX 980 ti Gaming 6G
  • SSD: Crucial 256gb (used only for os)
  • HDD: 3TB Seagate.

  • The CPU is tested and stable at 4700mhz.

  • The RAM is tested and stable at 3466mhz.

  • The graphics board is using a custom BIOS to allow +134w.

  • The voltage is set at 1231.3mV fixed.

  • The core clock is at +100.

  • The graphics RAM is set to +500 (making it total 4000mhz). Up a couple of days ago the system was running fine. No problems with any games at all.

When I started sleeping dogs definitive today, around 30 seconds in, the game crashed to desktop.

The GPU never went above 55c for that 30 seconds and it's power usage only hit 102%.

I thought it was just a bug so tried again with the same problem.

Thinking it might be Sleeping Dogs at fault, I tried Doom (2006) at 4K max settings.

10 seconds later, it crashed with an error box which looks as if it's part of the game, not windows.

After checking event viewer, under "system" there are a chain of errors stating that the media is corrupt.

Both games are installed on the HDD so this brought me to think the disk is damaged.

Is this error possible in the event of a video card problem? or does it have to be the HDD?

My wife frequently kicks the PC when she's angry, and this past week she must have kicked it 5 or 6 times.

Last week, whilst I was doing my physical clean out of the PC, I placed the graphics card on the table so I could get at the MB with the compressed air better.

When I started spraying she got angry about not being able to hear the TV and she forcefully pushed the graphics card off the table and into the case.

It looks like it only struck the back plate of the card and didn't touch the MB, the back plate damage came from the PSU as there is a clear scratch on it now.

The HDD is mounted on rubber discs (don't know the english word) so I think they may have absorbed some of the impact.

Which one is most likely to be the problem component? The only other thing that's been changed is the PSU.

For the sake of SLi 1080s when I get them it was an 850 corsair supply and is now a 1200w corsair.

I doubt that would cause any problems but I'm just trying to cover everything.

All components have the latest drivers. The MB is an ASUS Maximus III Hero.
