Hillary supporters: What do you see in Hillary that you don't in Bernie? Bernie supporters: What do you see in Bernie that you don't in Hillary?

I might be an odd test case since I grew up in Vermont, but I'm a staunch Hillary backer. I think Bernie is a fundamentally good person who believes in his message. However, I think that:

  • Everything he's proposing is very expensive, and only some of it is actually desirable (i.e., single payer vs. de-normalizing trade relations with China);

  • His policy platform is incredibly pie-in-the-sky with almost no hard numbers, and the numbers he has mentioned or endorsed are not believable;

  • Western Europe's growth model - even if we want to apply it here, which is a hard lift given what Europe looks like these days - cannot simply be transplanted here. Especially in areas like energy, medical research, and trade, what works for Denmark and Findland is not necessarily the best policy prescription for the United States if we want to maximize overall welfare.

  • Lastly, Bernie has absolutely no way whatsoever to get any of this done. Obama was elected in the biggest anti-Republican wave election since Carter, and he experienced enormous pushback only after proposing some middle-of-the-road changes to health care. This "political revolution" schtick is absolute nonsense. Most of America does not believe in what Bernie believes in, full stop. Furthermore, I personally know multiple people who worked on the hill for Bernie as staffers, and for Vermont's other senator and at-large congressman. To a person, they agreed that he's an awful staff manager who apparently rubs almost everyone he works with the wrong way. Virtually none of his colleagues like him because he's seen as an opportunistic gadfly- like Ted Cruz. Bernie is, I think, more likeable and reasonable, but the comparison still holds water. I'm sure books will be written about this campaign in a few years and I might be proven wrong about his personal style, but I'm just relaying what I've heard almost every time I talk to people I know who work on the hill.
