How do you make 1920's style makeup work for darker skin?

You can absolutely pull this off!

Here are some key things about this kind of look:

  • Strong brow
  • Poppin' lashes top and bottom --think doll lashes
  • Rounded cheek color
  • Rounded/Cupid's bow mouth with darker lip color.

Check out Josephine Baker as an excellent example. Of pretty much everything, honestly, but definitely of a Black woman contemporary example of the look.

If you look at photos of fashions from the time you'll see those same elements. Here's another example. And here's another one of Clara Bow. Doll lashes, smoky eye, sharp brow, round cheek, pouty mouth.

One thing many of us brown gals have going on is really nice, round lips. Those can really drive this whole look to a new level, so emphasize them. The lip and the lash are focal points for this. The cheek should be fresh and dewy and natural looking, so don't go too bright on the color, but add something with a touch of warm gold shimmer.

A trick you can use on the eye area is to line your inner waterline with a highlighter shade, rather than something dark. Go two or three shades lighter than your skin tone, or something halfway between your skin tone and the whites of your eyes. That will make your peepers pop, and create contrast with the lashes and eye shadow.
