How effective are stun guns?

I have the absolute minimal experience necessary in order to say I have experience: I've once zapped myself in the leg with a stun gun. What I can say is that in the moment I touched it to my leg I had no thoughts except about the stun gun.

Since this wasn't a resistance scenario and I wasn't testing whether I could act while in this state I'm not going to make a claim to that effect, but what I can tell you is that I didn't lose control over my body (no spasms or anything) and I didn't pass out.

I wouldn't even describe the sensation as pain since it was more like that first moment after you cut yourself with a super sharp knife where your mind just zeroes in on the cut but not because you can feel it, only because it's the most important thing in the moment. Of course, this was a few years ago so zap me again and I might remember how much it actually hurt.
