How long did it take to sing well

I'm a nonsinger, which means that I'm as impartial here as possible. I don't particularly care for Broadway singing, and I certainly don't sing in a band - even a 1970s punk rock band would turn someone like me away.

Music and the way the brain processes it is a research topic that has been investigated for several decades. There are scientists and institutes and departments at universities who specialize in this. E.g. the BRAMS institute (https://www.brams.org), Psyche Loui, Daniel Levitin, the "Music, Mind and Brain" researchers at Goldsmiths (University of London, England). If you ever want to read about this, I'd recommend This Is Your Brain On Music by Daniel Levitin. Another interesting book is Bad Singer by Tim Falconer. I have read a lot about this topic, and I understand that the scientific perspective clashes with the naive perception that is unfortunately also perpetuated by so-called talent shows on TV - that one either has talent, or one doesn't.

If you are a religious person, I understand that you rather want to believe that God made you special than that your skills essentially depend on the way you grew up. But there is this thing called science, and it sees things differently.

One other thing that I also wrote to another poster: There is a lot of contempt in your message. Contempt is a toxic attitude that is not conducive to artistic development. Let other people like whatever music they like. Let them pursue their path, even if it is not yours.
