That's actually the defining trait of my main character but it's not the petty type of hypocrisy like badmouthing others but getting mad when it's done to them. It's more akin to a person who doesn't value their life and wouldn't care if they died on the spot yet if someone they love were to say that he'd tell them to live on and be devastated of they died.

Throughout the story he takes on the mantle of a protector and builds up this facade of being an indestructible pillar of support but in reality it's ready to crumble at any moment and he knows it but refuses to seek help and buries everything deep in his heart until everything collapses in spectacular fashion all the while he's chastising people for not seeking his help earlier.

I'm sure you yourself know how hypocritical you are. Everyone is as it's human nature. Take some time and self reflect. The worst thing you can do is be inconsistent and not have a reason, even if it's just "I don't like it when others do it". Lot of hypocrisy is emotionally based, not logical.
