How do software like Solidworks find out if you're a commercial or personal user?

They add some line codes in the software that detects any kind of copy or patching or ilegal use of the original software.

Naturally, they will only obtain your IP if you connect the device or LAN you are working and have the software installed to the internet.

They also detect all the devices that are or were connected to the device that was using the copy or patched software

They then gather a list os all the external IPs and mac addresses of all the devices that you connected to the machine where you installed the software (copy, or with patched or cracked adons)

This is the reality. In some countries this is illegal but they are carefull and advertise the warning in the product case and on their website.

And they sue all the companies that use their software.

If you're a single person and used once or twice they won't bother you.

Trust me on this. I work on cibersecurity and I had a case with them and 2 companies that were using a bunch of copies.

They are pretty stoburn and annoying and basically a pain in the neck for all the people who use their software without paying.

Hope it helps.
