Human Evolution question from a teacher

The word I think you’re looking for is “snouts”

Most mammals have a mouth and nose that protrude from their faces but we don’t. When you look at our ancestors, you can tell they also had snouts by looking at their bones.

The best way, I think, to explain how we know that our ancestors didn’t also have noses on top of their snouts, is that we know why WE don’t have snouts but do have noses.

The most BASIC explanation is that we lost our snouts as our brains got bigger and began walking upright to aid in the survival of the mother and infant during childbirth. Childbirth is uniquely difficult for humans and it makes sense to lose the snout in order to preserve the size of the brain.

Why don’t we have just holes on our faces then? Noses and snouts heat air in cold weather and filters out dust and particles from our lungs and brain. Having both a nose and a snout is just unnecessary.
