Hypothyroidism and Body Image

My doctor suggested a keto diet, not entirely heavy on meat but rather emphasis on infinite veggies and a palm-sized amount of protein. I find that once I cut out processed carbs, the weight really does fall off. Part of the issue with hypo is that we retain water, and carbs also retain water, so it's a vicious cycle.

However, is keto doable every day? Not usually, when you're in a social setting or have a craving. I'm a big believer in not being drastic when it comes to diet. Start slow, learn the calorie counts of food, cut out the most heavy-calorie and processed things like soda if you can. Find yummy replacements that are healthier for you. Eating slower helps, portion control is the biggest thing, really. Chew mindfully, journal what you eat, etc. Lots of water. It's a process. And don't beat yourself up if you have a setback, that's the biggest thing. Paradoxically, even though veggies aren't the first thing I reach for if I have a craving, I find when my meals are mostly veg I am a lot less hungry because I'm getting nutrients my body needs.
