Maybe 5 or 6 times in my life and each time was severely uncomfortable. It was always used in a joking context and was always (obviously) unnecessary. And each person who said it told me outright that they aren’t racist. Unfortunately none of them will ever take the time to research exactly what racism really is, how deep it goes, how many levels there are to it, how harmful it is, and how problematic their thinking is. Even I don’t fully understand, but I have done research now and then, and I have not allowed myself to be blind to it, and I am certainly not in denial about it. It takes zero effort to acknowledge the issue and not contribute to it.
