If someone takes out a knife and tells me to hand over my wallet, would I be able to shoot them and play the self defense card if this scenario took place in California?

There are a few articles, and yeah, they don't tell the story. All are vague and just state a report of a verbal dispute and a gunshot, two arrested. There is no mention of witness statements or a burglary or robbery attempt. One outlet said there was a party when the dispute took place but according to those on scene, there wasn't a party they're all roomates at that location and where hanging out that evening, outside of the one friend that was also charged. They painted it out to sound like dude shot just to shoot. That said, I wasn't there, I only know what I've been told. it's cleyshay, but I dont see my buddy just shooting someone for no reason, but that's been said about others and it turned out not good. Either way, pretty shitty to have I believe 8 ppl there state what happened was self defense and still catch a charge over it.
